How to qualify for Social Security disability benefits

Qualifying for Social Security disability benefits can be crucial for disabled individuals who need help with their everyday expenses. Social Security disability (SSD) benefits can be challenging to obtain which is why disabled individuals should be familiar with the process of qualifying for benefits.

It is important for disabled individuals seeking Social Security disability benefits to understand that there is an initial application process but that there is also an appeals process because many applications for benefits are initially denied. Trained guidance throughout the process of applying for Social Security disability benefits, and appealing a denial of benefits if necessary, can be helpful. Eligibility for Social Security disability benefits is based on medical condition and work history.

Disabled individuals must suffer from a medical condition that is severe enough that it prevents them from working and is expected to last 12 months or longer or result in death. The Social Security Administration maintains a list of disabling medical conditions but disabling medical conditions can be established other ways as well. Medical conditions on the list that are considered disabling include heart disease; cystic fibrosis; cerebral palsy; quadriplegia and other spinal injuries; and Schizophrenia and other mental disorders.

To qualify for SSD benefits, disabled individuals must also meet work history requirements which are earned through a job that pays into Social Security. It is important for disabled individuals to maintain their medical records for both the application and appeals process and to also be familiar with how both the applications and appeals processes work so they can get the benefits they need.
